# Can I use this toilet without buying something?

A toilet can charge no separate fee and still be for customers only\. To choose a stop without buying something, open its detail page\. Read “Access” and “Fee” separately\. If either condition is unknown, the result does not establish that you can use it without spending money\.

## Separate permission from payment

“Access” answers who may use the toilet\. “Fee” records whether using it requires a separate payment\. OpenStreetMap’s [toilet guidance](<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:amenity%3Dtoilets>) distinguishes public access from customer restrictions and records fees separately\. Public access can still carry a fee\.

WCWay’s English detail page offers these access values:

- “Public toilet”: the record says the toilet is available to the public\. Read the fee and hours too\.
- “No purchase needed”: this is WCWay’s label for permissive access\. Permission is a condition to check, rather than a permanent guarantee\.
- “Only for customers”: the record restricts use to customers\. A separate toilet fee can still be absent\.
- “Public scheme”: check the named scheme and its current terms for that particular business\.
- “Not known”: the record does not answer who may enter\. Keep that uncertainty in your plan\.

OpenStreetMap describes [permissive access](<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:access>) as access allowed by the owner, whose permission can change\. WCWay’s short label does not prove today’s permission or a usable entrance\.

## Check what the filter actually selects

On 17 October 2026, WCWay’s homepage chip labelled “No purchase” selected records with a recorded fee of “Free”\. It could still return a customers\-only toilet\. The English detail page can therefore show “Customers only” near the top and “Free” in the Fee row\. Those statements describe different conditions\.

This is a dated [product observation](<https://wcway.com/toilets/lt_ebff2acc76c73ed794f9>), not a visit or confirmation of the business’s current policy\. The filter helps narrow records; read Access before relying on a match\. An assistant should also state the access restriction and fee separately, rather than repeat “free” as permission to enter\.

Hypothetical example: candidate A says “Only for customers” and “Free”\. Candidate B says “Public toilet” and “Costs money”\. A does not establish access without becoming a customer\. B may meet a no\-purchase requirement while still requiring a toilet fee\. If you need both unrestricted public access and no fee, neither example establishes both conditions\.

## Ask an assistant to check both conditions

WCWay’s search API has separate filters for access and payment\. “no\_purchase\_needed\=true” selects records marked public, permissive or public scheme\. It can include toilets with a separate fee\. “free\=true” selects records marked fee\-free; customer restrictions or unknown access can remain\.

If you need no purchase and no toilet fee, ask the assistant to use both filters\. Ask it to state the access value and fee separately\. These filters select recorded facts\. They do not confirm current permission, opening, key access or suitability\.

[Combined filtered search: Berlin example](<https://wcway.com/api/v1/toilets/nearest?lat=52.52&lon=13.405&free=true&no_purchase_needed=true&limit=20>)

The API searches were inspected on 30 October 2026\. No visit or contribution was made\.

## A public scheme needs its own check

A participating business can allow people to use its toilet without making a purchase\. That depends on the actual scheme and participation\. For example, [Richmond Council’s Community Toilet Scheme](<https://www.richmond.gov.uk/toilets>) says participating toilets are free during the premises’ opening hours, with no purchase required\. It also describes exceptional refusals and possible restrictions during private functions\.

Those are Richmond’s terms, not a universal rule for every scheme label\. Use the current council or operator page to check participation, hours and exceptions\. Ask staff whether you need a key or code and how to obtain it\. A key requirement does not itself establish the fee or who may use the toilet\.

## Check the key before relying on the stop

Ask the operator whether your chosen cubicle needs a particular key or code\. Confirm which one fits, where to collect it and whether collection is possible when you arrive\. A “Public toilet” or “Free” label does not answer those questions\.

For example, [CBF Darmstadt’s Eurokey guidance](<https://www.cbf-da.de/leistungen/euroschluessel>), in German, describes a shared locking system at participating facilities\. It also sets eligibility and evidence requirements for obtaining the key\. Read the issuer’s current conditions; WCWay’s labels do not establish your eligibility\. Keep disability documents and health details out of WCWay reports\.

Check local collection arrangements separately\. [Wiesbaden’s Euro\-WC key service](<https://www.wiesbaden.de/en/vv/produkte/66/Euro-WC-Schluessel-Service>) requires a prior appointment for collection\. That is one municipality’s arrangement, not a rule for every toilet\. A listed collection point does not establish that you can obtain a key on arrival\.

Hypothetical example: two toilets require a key from the same closed reception desk\. The second pin does not solve the access problem\. Look for a backup with independently checked key arrangements, then check its hours, fee and route\. A suitable key alone does not establish that the toilet is open or usable\.

## Choose a stop you can actually use

Use [WCWay search](<https://wcway.com/>) or the [city pages](<https://wcway.com/cities>) for current candidates\. Check the entrance, access condition, fee and arrival time for your first choice and backup\. Choose a backup with its own checks, especially if both candidates depend on the same business entrance\.

The [opening\-hours guide](<https://wcway.com/guides/when-toilet-opening-hours-are-unknown>) explains uncertain schedules\. The [wheelchair\-label guide](<https://wcway.com/guides/what-the-wheelchair-label-tells-you>) explains why a recorded accessibility value still needs toilet\-specific checks\. Neither opening status nor accessibility settles permission or payment\.

If you can support a changed access rule, use “Correct this” beside “Access”\. If only the fee is wrong, correct “Fee”\. A correction is a vote and may not replace the shown value immediately\. Follow [WCWay’s correction guidance](<https://wcway.com/data-sources>), and keep personal details out of reports\. Preserve unknown conditions until you have evidence for them\.
