# What the wheelchair label tells you

WCWay’s wheelchair label records an accessibility claim\. It does not establish that you can reach and use the toilet\. Open the detail page, read the exact value, then check the entrance, facilities and access conditions you need\.

## Read the value behind the filter

The wheelchair filter includes records marked “yes” and “limited”\. A matching result can therefore have restricted access\. It excludes “no” and unknown values\. No matching result means no matching record was found; it does not establish that every nearby toilet is inaccessible\. [Current filtered results](<https://wcway.com/api/v1/toilets/nearest?lat=52.52&lon=13.405&wheelchair=true&limit=20>)\.

The English detail page uses these labels:

- “Wheelchair accessible”: the record says yes\. Check the facilities you need before relying on it\.
- “Wheelchair access limited”: the record says limited\. Find out which restriction applies and whether it affects your visit\.
- “Not wheelchair accessible”: the record says no\. Keep that recorded restriction in your decision\.
- “Wheelchair access not known”: the record has no usable accessibility value\. The missing information establishes neither suitability nor a barrier\.

For a toilet inside a venue, ask about the toilet’s entrance and facilities\. Accessibility information about the venue alone does not establish that its toilet meets your requirements\.

## When the wheelchair filter finds no match

First check the message\. “Could not load toilets” is a load error, not an empty result\. Use “Try again” when the connection recovers\. If location is off or unavailable, use “Search for a place” with the street, station or town you mean\.

For an empty result, check the chosen place and active filters\. You can turn off “Wheelchair” to inspect records that the filter leaves out\. Other records may appear; this does not establish that you can use them\.

Open a candidate’s detail page and read its exact wheelchair value\. An unknown wheelchair value leaves accessibility unconfirmed\. A “Not wheelchair accessible” label remains a recorded restriction\. Ask the responsible operator about the entrance and facilities you need before treating a candidate as usable\.

Keep your essential requirements when checking a backup\. Removing a filter is a way to investigate missing information, not a reason to accept an unsuitable toilet\. The search controls were inspected on 20 October 2026; no visit or contribution was made\.

## Check the toilet and the way to it

OpenStreetMap’s toilet guidance treats a positive wheelchair value as an indication\. Individual requirements vary, and contributors may record a wheelchair sign without checking every physical feature\. The label supplies no measurements of your chosen entrance or cubicle\. [OpenStreetMap accessibility guidance](<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Wheelchair_accessible_toilets>)\.

Before choosing the stop, look for current toilet\-specific information from its operator or municipality\. Ask about the details that affect your use:

- Is there a step\-free entrance and a usable route from your arrival point to the cubicle?
- Are door widths, turning space and transfer space suitable for your wheelchair and needs?
- Are the required grab rails and basin usable for you? If you need a hoist or adult changing table, is that equipment present?
- Is the accessible cubicle unlocked? If it needs a key or staff assistance, where and when can you obtain it?

An accessible toilet can have a separate key restriction from the other toilets\. A wheelchair label does not answer that access question\. It also does not establish opening hours or the fee\. Read those fields separately\. [Unknown opening hours](<https://wcway.com/guides/when-toilet-opening-hours-are-unknown>) explains how to check the planned arrival time\.

## For a baby, check the room as well as the table

Read “Changing table” separately from “Wheelchair”\. [WCWay shows whether a changing table is recorded](<https://wcway.com/toilets/lt_97635c229fc17e939607>); it does not show which room contains it\. A wheelchair label for the toilet does not establish access to that changing surface\.

[OpenStreetMap records the table’s location separately](<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:changing_table>): for example, in a women’s, men’s or unisex toilet, or in another room\.

Ask the operator where the changing surface is and whether you can reach and enter that room\. Check any room\-specific key arrangements and hours\. If a required condition stays unknown, check another candidate while keeping that uncertainty explicit\.

## Need an adult changing bench and hoist?

Check these separately from the wheelchair label\. WCWay’s “Changing table” field records yes, no or unknown\. It does not specify an adult\-sized bench or a hoist\. Selecting both wheelchair and changing\-table filters therefore does not establish this equipment\.

[Changing Places guidance](<https://www.changing-places.org/pages/view/important-information>) identifies a height\-adjustable adult\-sized changing bench and a hoist as essential equipment\. The German [Toiletten für alle project](<https://www.toiletten-fuer-alle.de/das-projekt/qualitaetsstandards.html>) also specifies a care bench and a person hoist\. A baby changing table does not establish that either item is available\.

Read the individual facility details in the [Toiletten für alle directory](<https://www.toiletten-fuer-alle.de/wo-wie/nc.html>) or the directory linked by Changing Places\. Before travelling, ask the venue whether the bench and hoist you need are present and currently usable\. Confirm that room’s opening hours and key arrangements\. Check your backup the same way\. If those answers are missing, keep the equipment unconfirmed\.

## Make the backup answer the same questions

Hypothetical example: one candidate is marked “Wheelchair access limited”, but the record does not explain the restriction\. Another is marked “Wheelchair accessible”, but you cannot confirm how to obtain its key\. Neither record answers the condition you need\. Check with the responsible operator and inspect another candidate if the uncertainty remains\.

Use [WCWay search](<https://wcway.com/>) or the [city pages](<https://wcway.com/cities>) for current candidates\. Check the backup’s entrance, facilities, hours and access independently\. Distance alone does not establish a step\-free route\.

## Correct only the fact you can support

On a detail page, use “Correct this” beside “Wheelchair” when you can support a different value\. The correction is a vote; it may not change the displayed fact immediately\. Keep unknown requirements unresolved\. A photograph of a wheelchair symbol does not establish door dimensions or equipment\.

Follow [WCWay’s correction guidance](<https://wcway.com/data-sources>)\. Keep personal health information out of reports\. The useful outcome is a candidate whose recorded facts and current checks support your particular stop, with a backup checked the same way\.
