# When toilet opening hours are unknown

“Hours not known” means WCWay cannot determine the opening state from the record\. It does not mean the toilet is closed\. Before relying on that stop, check its recorded hours, access and fee, then choose a backup with its own supporting information\.

## Read the status and the schedule

WCWay calculates its opening label from recorded hours, the toilet’s location and the time\. Even “Open” describes a schedule calculation rather than a live check of the entrance\. WCWay notes that toilets can close, move or disappear\. [WCWay’s data limits](<https://wcway.com/about>)\.

Open the result’s detail page and read the “Opening hours” row\. It can contain a recorded schedule while the main label still says “Hours not known”\. Missing hours, an uncertain schedule or a calculation error can all produce that label\. The label alone does not tell you which cause applies\.

## An open\-now filter can keep unknown hours

WCWay’s API has an “open\_now” filter for searches by assistants and other tools\. It removes results calculated as closed\. Results with an unknown opening state can remain\. A match therefore does not establish that the toilet is open\.

The [filtered search](<https://wcway.com/api/v1/toilets/nearest?lat=52.525&lon=13.369&open_now=true&limit=20>) was inspected on 19 October 2026\. It included unknown states with both missing and recorded hours\. No visit or opening confirmation was made\. The homepage has no corresponding filter button\.

If an assistant uses this filter, ask it to state each result’s opening status and keep unknown states explicit\. Open the detail page and check the schedule for your arrival\. Do not use a filtered match alone to settle the time question\.

## Read access and fee separately

A result’s opening status does not tell you whether you may enter or must pay\. Read the access and fee rows on its detail page\. Check any customer, key or scheme requirement before choosing that stop\. If a condition you need is unknown, keep it unresolved\.

The homepage’s “No purchase” chip currently selects records marked fee\-free\. A customers\-only record can still pass that filter, so check its access rule\. Likewise, read any wheelchair or changing\-table information for the particular result\. A wheelchair label does not establish the entrance route or every facility you need\.

“Still there?” records a dated presence confirmation\. It does not check the opening schedule or access conditions\. A displayed confirmation date describes a past check; it cannot fill in missing hours for your arrival\.

## Check the time you expect to arrive

Look for a current official source when you can identify the operator or responsible municipality\. Check that its hours apply to the toilet, rather than only the surrounding building\. Read the relevant weekday, breaks and any holiday or seasonal exception\. If the source does not answer the question, contact the operator or keep the time unknown\.

Recorded OpenStreetMap schedules can include split hours, holiday exceptions and overnight periods\. [OpenStreetMap schedule documentation](<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:opening_hours>)\. WCWay may be unable to calculate some records\. Even if the label says “Open” now, check whether the toilet will be open when you arrive\.

## Choose a backup with its own checks

Use the nearby toilets list on the detail page to inspect another result\. That list includes candidates without an opening, access or accessibility filter\. A nearby pin therefore needs the same checks as your first choice\.

**Hypothetical plan:** you expect to arrive at 18:10\. Your first candidate has unknown hours\. An official, toilet\-specific schedule for a second candidate ends at 18:00\. The second candidate does not solve the time problem, despite having recorded hours\. Look for another candidate whose relevant schedule and access conditions support your arrival\. Current availability still needs checking\.

Prefer a backup that does not depend on the same entrance or building closure as the first stop\. Check the actual route too\. WCWay’s walking\-time estimate uses straight\-line distance; it does not establish a walkable route or your arrival time\.

## At a station, check the route behind the minutes

WCWay’s walking estimate does not calculate a route through a station’s corridors, exits or levels\. It uses straight\-line distance\. Check the actual route before treating those minutes as time available for a toilet stop\.

Find the toilet entrance on the station operator’s plan\. Check its level and the route from your arrival platform, then the route to your next platform\. If you need a lift, check whether it serves those levels and read its current status\. A wheelchair label on the toilet record does not answer these route questions\.

For an example of the information to look for, DB’s [Berlin Hauptbahnhof map](<https://www.bahnhof.de/en/berlin-hauptbahnhof/map>) separates levels and lists toilets and lift status\. The [station page](<https://www.bahnhof.de/en/berlin-hauptbahnhof>) also links lift information\. These pages were checked on 15 October 2026\. Open the current operator information for your own station; this example does not confirm a usable route or an open toilet\.

Plan the whole stop: the outward route, access or key collection, any queue, toilet use and the onward route\. WCWay’s estimate does not establish a time allowance for those steps\. If the route or facility hours remain unknown, the displayed minutes cannot establish that the stop fits your connection\.

Hypothetical backup: two toilet pins share the only lift you can use\. If that lift is unavailable, both choices fail for the same reason\. Check a candidate reached by a different usable route, then check its own hours, access and facilities\. A second pin alone does not remove the first uncertainty\.

## Add what you actually know

If you have an observed or authoritative schedule, use “Correct this” beside “Opening hours”\. The saved correction is a vote and may not change the displayed fact immediately\. Use “Report a problem” for wrong hours, closure, a toilet that is gone or the wrong location\. A moderator checks reports; keep personal details out of the note\. [Correction and reporting guidance](<https://wcway.com/data-sources>)\.

Return to [WCWay search](<https://wcway.com/>) or the [city pages](<https://wcway.com/cities>) for current results\. Check opening, access and the route for your intended stop and your backup\.
